Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium (Rare Earth) Magnets are generally considered to be the strongest permanent magnets available in the consumer market. They offer a high resistance to demagnetization, high Gauss values (unit of magnetic flux density) for size and can be manufactured as Disc’s, Blocks, Rings or in Custom shapes. Tolerance of + or – 0.05mm.

Neodymium Magnets are generally finished with Zinc, Nickel or an Epoxy coating to avoid oxidation. Neodymium will rust if the coating is damaged and then exposed to damp conditions. Temperature range is normally 80 degrees Celsius. High Temperature is 120 and Ultra High is 180. If temperature is exceeded, a rapid irreversible reduction in Field Strength will occur.

Handling: Neodymium Magnets are very brittle and being very strong magnetically, care is needed when handling. Where possible, especially with larger sizes, use gloves and safety glasses to avoid pinched fingers and eye damage if magnets accidentally crash together and shatter.

Machining: Neodymium is prone to chipping and hence is not recommended to be machined by normal methods. It can be abrasively ground with the addition of a coolant to minimize the risk of fires caused by the oxidized grinding dust and heat fracturing of the material.
